psychodynamic approach Flashcards
key assumptions
behaviour and feelings are affected by unconcious motives
adult behaviour is rooted in childhood experiences
all behaviour has a cause and is determined
tripartite personality
iceburg
concsious mind is the tip of the iceburg, unconscious mind cannot be seen. made up of instincts and is driving force of behaviour and personality
protects the conscious from anxiety, fear, trauma, etc. through repression.
what is the tripartite personality?
the idea that personality is made up of three parts, ID Ego and Superego
what is the Id?
instincts. operates on pleasure principle, gets what it wants, based on instinctive drive
what is the ego?
reality. operates in reality principle, acts as a mediator between id and superego, reduces conflict in mind with coping mechanisms
what is the superego?
morality. based on morality principle, internalised sense of right and wrong, represents moral standards, punishes ego if wrong through guilt.
what are the 3 defense mechanisms?
repression, denial, displacement
what is repression
forcing a distressing memory out of the conscious mind
what is denial
refusing to acknowledge parts of reality
what is displacement>
transferring feelings from source of distress onto a substitute target
what are the psychosexual stages
developmental stages that all children pass through. oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital
