cognitive approach Flashcards
what are the key assumptions of the cognitive approach?
- interested in internal mental processes
- experimental and scientific methods, study indirectly and make inferences
-human mind and computers share similarities, and the mind can be studied as such.
what are inferences?
assumptions about mental processes that cannot be directly observed
what are internal mental processes?
operations in the mind such as memory, language, attention, etc.
what are schema?
beliefs and expectations that influence cognitive processing. they are developed from experience
what are theoretical/computer models?
models of how mental processes work in computer terms, e.g. the MSM
what is cognitive neuroscience?
the study of how biological structures influence cognitive processes.
AO3 - RS
objective scientific methods, strong scientific credibility
however relies on inferences, mainly theoretic
AO3 - RWA
developments in treating depression, also improving EWT cognitive interview
AO3 - machine reductionism
ignores influence of emotion and motivation on the cognitive system
