What does the unconscious contain
The drive of our behaviours,repressed memories
What are repressed memories
Memories that disturb us that can be accessed through dreams or slips of the tongue
Preconcious
Contains thoughts and memories that we can access if wanted
3 parts of personality
ID- pleasure principle, instinctual desires
Ego- reality principle, defence mechanisms
Superego- morality principle,sense of right and wrong moral
what is defence mechanism
Unconscious strategies to prevent being overwhelmed by trauma however distort reality
What are some defence mechanisms
Repression-ignoring certain events
Denial- blocking out the trauma
Displacement- placing a trauma into something else eg little hans fear of horses was actually castration
5 psychosexual stages
Oral 0-1, mothers breast mouth
Anal 1-3- pleasure from anus
Phallic 3-5 pleasure from genitals
Latency earlier conflicts repressed leading to fixations
Genital sexual desires due to puberty
Oedipus complex
Boys develop feelings towards mother and hatred for father eg castration fear of balls cut off
Electra complex
Girls desire there father and hate mother(penis envy) which later on becomes desire for a baby
Benefit
Human benefit through therapy psychoanalysis
Limitation
Psychic determinism, everything is driven by unconscious so free will is illusive
