PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVES Flashcards
LESSON 5
Father of psychoanalysis, who conceptualizes the idea of psychoanalytic theory; id, ego, superego. His iceberg of human’s conscious, preconscious, and unconscious mind.
SIGMUND FREUD
Things we are not aware of and cannot be aware of (Instincts: Sexual and aggressive/ Fears)
THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND
Serves as the unconscious state that drives the pleasure and desire that you are not aware of. Which compromises two instincts: Eros & Thanatos
ID
The conscious state
EGO
The moral or ethical framework that regulates how the ego operates (the one who says what is right or what is wrong)
SUPEREGO
include sexual procreation, survival and pleasure
LIFE INSTINCTS
include aggression, self-harm, and destruction.
DEATH INSTINCTS
there are five stages of growth in which people’s personalities and sexual selves evolve. These phases are the oral stage, anal stage, phallic stage, latent stage, and genital stage.
PSYCHOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT
Refers to a feeling of anxiety resulting from the ego’s inability to mediate the conflict between the id and superego. We use this when ego can’t resolve the internal conflict. (We are unaware that we’re using this, to reduce anxiety)
DEFENSE MECHANISM
- Behavior is determined by irrational forces, unconscious motivations and
biological and instinctual drives. - Instincts are central to libido
(sexual energy)- its goal is to gain pleasure and avoiding pain (life instincts) - Death instincts = aggression drive
It is the place where mostly unacceptable thoughts, wishes,
feelings and memories
HINT: FREUD’S VIEW OF _________
FREUD’S VIRW OF NATURE
Small amount of activity we know about. (Thoughts/perceptions)
THE CONSCIOUS MIND
Things we could be aware of if we wanted to or tried. (Memories/Stored knowledge)
THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
*Compare mind to a iceberg. He said only about one-tenth of our mind is conscious, and the rest of our
mind is unconscious.
* Unacceptable urges and desires are kept in our unconscious through a
process called repression.
HINT: LEVELS OF _____________
LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS
Refuse to accept real events because they are unpleasant (Ex. You refuses to accept the serious diagnosis from the doctor and insists that the doctor misdiagnosed you)
DENIAL
Transferring inappropriate behaviors onto a more acceptable or less threatening target (Ex. Your dad usually tells you harsh words, but instead of directly addressing your frustration to your father, you misdirects the aggression to your younger brother)
DISPLACEMENT
Attributing unacceptable desires to others (Ex. You cheated on your partner because you accused them that they cheated on you)
PROJECTION
Justifying behaviors by substituting acceptable reasons for less acceptable real reasons (Ex. You justify your low grades because you think that your teacher doesn’t like you)
RATIONALIZATION
Reducing anxiety by adopting beliefs contrary to your own beliefs (Ex. You like someone, but instead of showing it, you mask it by the idea of hating them because the idea of liking them is uncomfortable)
REACTION FORMATION
Returning to coping strategies for less mature ages of development (Ex. You failed your bar exam then you start to cuddle your favourite toy returning to your younger self to cope up)
REGRESSION
Suppressing painful memories and thoughts (Ex. You cannot remember your traumatic experience in childhood. For instance, you’re scared to ride cars because of the car crash that happened before but unable to remember it)
REPRESSION
Redirecting unacceptable desires through socially acceptable channels (Ex. You have aggressive tendencies, then you channeled your tendencies and join boxing)
SUBLIMATION
*0-1 year old
*Derive pleasure though oral acitivities (sucking and tasting)
* They like to put things in their mouth
ORAL STAGE
*2-3 years
* Begin their potty training (Urination, pooping)
ANAL STAGE
- 3-6 years
- Boys are more attached to their mother, while girls are more attached to their father
- This is where Oedipus complex was conceptualized
PHALLIC STAGE
*6 years - puberty
* Children mostly spend time and interacts with same sex peers
LATENCY STAGE
*Beyond puberty
* Individuals are attracted to opposite sex peers.
GENITAL STAGE
Includes forceful feeding; underfed resulting to oral passive (trusting and dependency) and overfed: oral aggressive(aggression/dominating) of the child
ORAL
This includes toilet training of too harsh which results to anal retentive (tidiness, obsessiveness, mean, and stubbornness) and too lax: anal expulsive (untidiness/generosity)
ANAL
This includes abnormal family set up leading to unusual relationship to parents that resulting to self-obsession, inadequacy, envy, inferiority
PHALLIC
This includes where setting down in loving one-to-one relationship with another that results maturity, and able to love and be loved. Sexual instincts is directed to heterosexual pleasure.
GENITAL
