Psychoactive Drug
Changes our states of consciousness, perceptions, and moods.
Agonists
Binds to receptors in the brain and activate the receptors they bind to.
Antagonists
Occupy receptors but don’t activate them; block receptor activation from agonists.
Tolerance
When the body gets used to a medication so that more or a different one is needed to give the desired effect.
Physical Dependence
Unpleasant and dangerous reactions that may occur when people withdraw from a drug.
Psychological Dependence
Cognitive and emotional aspects of addictive drugs or withdrawal.
Addiction
People who are addicted have compulsive, uncontrollable craving for drugs.
Alcohol
Any beverage containing ethyl alcohol.
Barbiturates
Addictive sedative-hypnotic drugs that reduce anxiety and help people think.
Benzodiazepines
Most common group of anti-anxiety drugs.
Stimulants
Substances that increase the activity of the central nervous system, increased blood pressure and heart rate.
Caffeine
Most wisely used simulant, often consumed in coffee.
Amphetamines
Simulant that’s manufactured in the lab.
Methamphetamine
Powerful amphetamine drug. Illegal drug, super simulant, effects include eight hours of heightened energy and euphoria.
Cocaine
Powerful natural simulant. Effects include feeling excited, energetic, talkative, and euphoric.
