Psychoactive Drugs Flashcards
What are psychoactive drugs?
Psychoactive drugs are chemicals that cross the blood brain barrier and alter brain chemistry and functioning. Lead to changes in perception, cognition, volition, mood or behaviour.
Picture a psychoactive (Norman Bates in tie die) runner running through the blood brain barrier with chemical symbols in their hands. When they get through they drop the chemicals and start rearranging beakers.
What is the blood-brain barrier?
is the barrier between the circulating blood and the extra-cellular fluid in the brain.
What must a psychoactive drug do in order to have any effect?
It must cross the blood brain barrier.
Picture the psychedelic running with chem symbol knocking on the barrier to the brain he is not let in and the beakers are not rearrange. Finally he is let in and he rearranges the beakers.
Re-Uptake
Is the re-absorption of neurotransmitters by receptors in the presynaptic membrane.
Picture nero with his router being sucked through a membrane with the picture of an arrow in front of a deviled egg with a tic.
What is an agonist?
An agonist is a chemical that binds to a receptor and activates its function,
What is a receptor?
An organ or cell able to respond to light, heat, or other external stimulus and transmit a signal to a sensory nerve.
A region of tissue, or a molecule in a cell membrane, that responds specifically to a particular neurotransmitter, hormone, antigen, or other substance.
Picture an organ with a ray of light on it, a flame to it etc. When this happens the organ speaks to a nerve to transmit the sensation it is receiving.
Picture a tissue speaking to Nero with his router. It takes in what Nero is saying and writes a letter back to him (responds)
What is an antagonist?
Chemical that binds to a receptor but has no action. Prevents other substances for binging, effectively turning off the receptor.
Picture Aunt Agonist is sitting on your porch when you want to have a party. The house looks so lame that no one wants to come into the house for the party.
What is an SSRI?
Selective Serotonin ReUptake Inhibitor.
Does what it sounds like. Prevents ReUptake of serotonin but nothing else.
Related to antidepressants
What are 6 Common SSRI’s?
Fluoxetine = Prozac Citalopram = Celexa Escitalopram = Lexapro Fluoxamine = Luvox Paroxetine = Paxil Sertraline = Zoloft
An ox with the flu walking through a riot of Pro Zack supporters in saved by the bell
Sight a low pram and then you see a Lexas go by being hauled away in a cell.
EssA tikanan telling baby in a pram to get a Lexus like their bro
Pair of Ox sitting next to a backpack filled with windowsills
Fluoxamine (the flu ox is being mean) to a poor Ox with hearts streaming out of it (Luvox)
Certs and trays in a line (Sertraline) moving from left to right in a loft of people sewing (Zoloft)
What is an endogenous substrate?
.
What is an anti-psychotic?
An anti psychotic is a drug used to prevent psychotic behavior like hallucinations.
There are two types of anti-psychotic drugs typical and atypical. Both have been shown to have undesirable effects.
