Assumptions
- much of our behaviour is driven by unconscious motives
- childhood is a critical period in development of personality
- mental disorders arise from unresolved, unconscious conflicts in childhood
- resolution occurs through accessing the repressed ideas or conflicts
Psychodynamic
The perspective that describes the different forces that operate on the mind and direct human behaviour and experience
Psychoanalysis
A set of psychological theories and therapeutic techniques that have their origin in the work of Sigmund Freud
Unconscious
Behaviour / thoughts and feelings we are unaware of and cannot be aware of
ID
The pleasure principle, primitive drives
drive to have sex or drink
Ego
The reality principle to reduce conflict
Superego
The morality principle, right and wrong
Defence mechanisms
To protect the ego against traumatic things:
- repression
- denial
- displacement
Psychosexual stages
Five developmental stages all children pass through. At each stage there is different conflict where the outcome effects future development
Subconscious (preconscious)
Could be aware of it if we wanted to or tried
Penis envy
Girls become envious that their mother did not give them a penis
Oedipus complex
Sexual desire directed towards the mother and fear of castration from the father
Castration anxiety
A boy’s fear of losing or damaging his penis by his father for desires toward the mother
Fixation
An obsessive drive that may or may not be acted on an object, concept or person
Electra complex
Girls develop penis envy where they desire their father and dislike their mother
