3 core symptoms of depression
Anhedonia, anergia, low mood
Mild depression is characterised by
2 core symptoms and 2 other symptoms with minor functional impairment
Moderate depression is defined as
2 core symptoms and 3 other symptoms, with moderate-severe functional impairment
Severe depression is defined as
3 core symptoms and 4 other symptoms

PHQ-9 and HADS
Management for mild depression (3 points)
- Reassurance with follow up 2 weeks later
- 30 mins 4-5 times a week of aerobic exercise
- Low intensity CBT
Management for mild depression that has not responded to typical treatment
SSRI
Antidote for tricyclic antidepressant overdose
Glucagon and magnesium sulfate
Antidepressant for someone with depression experiencing insomnia and anorexia
Mirtazapine
Definition of a manic episode
Abnormally elevated mood for < 1 week + 3 additional symptoms that cause marked functional impairment, psychosis or hospitalisation.
Hypomanic episodes are defined as
Abnormally elevated mood with less severe functional impairment for 4 days. No psychosis.
A BAD depressive episode is defined as
< 2 weeks of depressed mood and 4 other symptoms
A mixed episode in BAD is defined as (3 points)
- Flitting between mania and depression
- In one week meets criteria for mania/hypomania with 3 depressive symptoms
- In two weeks meet criteria for depressive episode plus 3 manic/hypomanic symptoms
Bipolar I Disorder is
< 1 manic episode +/- major depressive episode lasting more than 4 days.
Bipolar II Disorder is
< 1 depressive episode +/- < 1 hypomanic episode. No mania.
