A

Diagnostic criteria for depression?

A

3 core + 2 other sx of (DEAD SWAMP):
Depressed mood
Energy loss/fatigue
Anhedonia

Death thoughts
Sleep disturbance
Worthlessness
Appetite/weight change
Mentation (concentration) decreased
Pychomotor agitation or retardation

Duration of sx to diagnose depression? Classification?

A

2 wk duration.
<5 sx = sub-threshold depressive symptoms
>5 + minor func. impairment = mild - moderate
Most sx on list, marked impact on ADL’s +/- psychotic sx = severe

Treatment of depression?

A

CBT
1st line drug = SSRI: fluoxetine (citalopram, paroxetine, sertraline (best in past hx of CVD))
Side effects: GI disturbance, increased risk of suicide in <30 yrs
