What is the Mental Health act Scot (2003)?
- Concerned purely with management & treatment of psychiatric disorders
- No provision for compulsory Tx of physcial problems (Only mental health problems)
- Can have detained patients in the community on “Leave of Absence”
What are the detention terms for Mental health Act Scot (2003)
- Emergency Detention - 72hrs
- Short term Detention - 28 days
- Compulsory Tx order - 6 months
- Detention for assessment by Dr - 2hrs
- Removal to a place of safety
List reasons for application of the 2003 Mental Health Act Scotland
- Person has a mental disorder
- Medical Tx is available which could stop their condition getting worse, or help treat some of their symptoms
- If that medical tx was not provided, there would be a significant risk to the person or others
- Because of the persons mental disorder, their ability to make decisions about med Tx is significantly impaired
- Use of compulsory powers is necessary
What are the two diff types of Mental health problems?
- Neuroses - Contact retained w/ reality
- Psychosis - Contact lost w/ reality

- Anxious Px - concerned about dental Tx
- Anxiety neurosis - concerned about everything(feels as if something is going to go wrong)
List the 3 Anxiety disorders
- Generalised anxiety disorder - free-floating anxiety in many/all situations
- Phobic anxiety - intense anxiety/panic in specific situations
- Panic disorder - unpredictable extreme anxiety
What is a Somatoform disorder?
- Repeated presentation of physical symptoms and persistent requests for med investigations, in spite of negative findings and reassurance that the symptoms have no physical bias/
- Manifestation of a problem that doesn’t exist medically or pathologically
What are the 2 main management strategies to psychiatry? Give examples
Psychological Tx - psycho education/anxiety management strategies/cognitive behaviroal therapy
Drug tx - Self medication/presribed med
List the 3 main types of anxiolytic drugs
- Alcohol
- Benzodiazepines (diazepam/midazolam/temazepam/lorazepam)
- Antidepressants (Tricyclic (noradrenaline & 5HT)/Mirtazepine/SSRI)

- TMD & Parafunc
- Oral Dysesthesias
- Denture intolerance

- treat AN as well as symptoms
What is OCD? & What can it lead to?
- Obsessive Compulsive disorder
- A fear of infection and can be fear of ‘dirty’ oral environment
- Rituals are developed to contain anxiety
- Can lead to depression
What is Perfectionism?
perfectionism - personality trait/habits or rituals that are followed rigidly/NOT to do with anxiety avoidance
What is OCD?
OCD - Mental health disorder/Involves repeated & unwanted thoughts that cause anxiety/individual performs a compulsive action to PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANXIETY/ ritual may not be related to anxiety itself
