Diagnostic criteria for a PD
A
Personality trait fulfils the 3 Ps:
- persistent: emerges in childhood/adolescence, endured into adulthood
- pervasive: occurs in most (if not all) areas of life
- pathological: causes distress, affects relationships, impairs social/occupational functioning
over extended period (usually >2 years)

Tx of PD
A
Bio:
- no licensed medication
- trialled if distressing Sx
- antipsychotics reduce pseudo hallucinations in BPD, impulsivity & aggression
- antidepressants reduce impulsivity & anxiety
- mood stabilisers improve fluctuations
- sedatives / anxiolytics short term as part of crisis plan
Psycho:
- CBT
- dialectical
- cognitive analytical therapy
- mentalisation based therapies
- therapeutic communities
- psychodynamic & psychoanalytic psychotherapy
Social:
- psychoeducation (client + family)
- crisis planning
- transitional care e.g. CAMHS –> adult
