Psych pharm drugs Flashcards
(44 cards)
Thorazine nonpsych use
control N/V, prolonged hiccups, relieves anxiety, and treats tetany
Tricyclic non-psych use
treats headaches and neuropathy
Define Akathisia
feeling restless and inability to stay still
define dystonia
abnormal muscle tone resulting in muscle spasms do to a side effect of drug therapy
what does lithium treat?
helps with bipolar, ADHD, depression, schizophrenia
What are the side effects of lithium toxicity?
vomiting, diarrhea, slurred speech, decrease in coordination, drowsiness
What is tardive dyskinesia
a side effect of antipsychotic medication. It’s used to treat schizophrenia. This causes uncontrollable jerking movements of the face and body.
What is oculogenic crisis?
involuntary spasm of the eye where the eyeball fixed into an unmovable position for a few minutes
What is Depakote aka valproic acid?
an anticonvusant that is used to treat seizures and to prevent migraines and headaches. It is also used to treat bipolar disorder.
What is agranulocytosis?
bone marrow doesn’t make a certain type of WBC. The most common would be neutrophils
What is neuroleptic malignant syndrome?
it affects the nervous system and causes symptoms like high fever and muscle stiffness. This is caused by a reaction to antipsychotic drugs and treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
What is tegretol?
it is also called Carbamazepine. It is used to prevent/ control seizures, used to relieve certain types of nerve pain such as trigeminal neuralgia and treats bipolar disorder
What does an anticholinergic effect mean?
it inhibits the transmission of parasympathetic nerve impulses to reduce spasm of smooth muscle
What is colace?
It is a laxative and stool softener used to treat constipation
What are the side effects of antipsychotic medication?
drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, weight gain, dry mouth, constipation, N/V, tardive dyskinesia, blurred vision
What are typical (traditional) anti-psychotic meds?
- haldol (haloperidol)
- laxitane (laxapine)
- mellaril (thioridazine)
- moban (molindone)
- novane (thiothixene)
- prolixene (fluphenazine)
- serentil (mesoridazine)
- stelazine (trifluoperazine)
- trilafon (perphenazine)
- thorazine (chlorpromazine)
What are atypical (non-traditional) anti-psychotic meds?
- abilify (aripiprazole)
- clozaril (clozapine)
- geodone (ziprasidone)
- risperdal (risperidone)
- seroquel (quetiapine)
- zyprexa (olanzapine)
What are the safety issues of clozaril?
-this causes dizzinesss, slows heartbeats, fainting and seizures.
-may increase risk of death in dementia related conditions
-taking antipsychotic medication during the last 3 months of pregnancy may cause problems in newborns
-if you become pregnant while taking clozapine, DO NOT take unless advised by doctor
clozapine can pass through breast milk and mat harm the nursing baby
what are the types of anticholinergic drugs that are used to treat Parkinsons?
- trihexyphenidyl
- benztropine
- orphenadrine
- procyclidine
- biperiden
What is an anticholinergic drug that treats involuntary movement, improves ability to walk, decreases sweat and saliva
trihexyphenidyl
What is an anticholinergic drug that stops muscle spasm, an antitremor, treats involuntary movement and improves walking
benztropine
What anticholinergic drug used to treat parkinsons is used to relieve muscle discomfort such as sprains ans strains
orphenadrine
What anticholinergic drug used to treat parkinsons is used to treat involuntary muscle movement due to side effects of drug and stops sever muscle spasms
procyclidine
What anticholnergic drug used to treat parkinsons is used to treat stiffnesss, tremors, spasm and poor muscle control of parkinson’s disease?
biperiden
