psych mental health - risk and protective factors Flashcards
risk factors
the likihood of a person suffering from mental disorder or experiencing a relapse ==> develope as a response of biological, psychological, sociocultural, environmental factor
the four P’s
predisposing risk factros
precipitating risk factors
perpetuation risk factors
protective factors
predisposing risk factor
Increase vulnerability to mental disorders & certain traits a child might be born with ==> inherited traits, environmental exposure before birth (toxins, alcohol and drugs), chronic social stressors, brain chemistry (natural networks are impaired),
precipritating risk factor
help the practiconer to understand the patients current symptoms, specific events or triggers to the onset of current problem ==> stressful life situations, being a victim of various abuse, traumatic experiences, long-term use of some meds.
prepetuation risk factors
inhibit recovery -> make mental disorders last longer then otherwise would ==> drug abuse, social iso, difficult relationships, poverty, weak immunity, poor parental attachment, previous mental illness etc
protective factors
HELPS to prevent the re/occurrence of mental disorder ==> good diet, good sleep, approp. meds, connecting with good friends, awareness or acceptance - guard against onset or relapse
biological risk factors
psychosocial structres -> biological processes, genetice predisposition
poor sleep
chronic sleep problems - sleep deprevation reacts more negatively to emotions, common w/ depression, anxiety, bipolar and ADHD
substance abuse
addictive substances changes the way our brain works, it interfere with chemical neutotramissions
alcoholism and depression
weed and depression
amphetamines and paranoia/anxiety
rumintion
obsessive thinking/worrying about negative aspects of th epast, present and future. prevents coping strategies => anxiety, can lead to depression
(cognitive therapy helps to make people see things differently)
impaired reasoning and memory
impaired reasoning: inability to engage in logical thinking - jumping to conclusions
impaired memory: short or long term memory - dementia, depression, schizophrenia, PTSD and bipolar
stress
release adrenaline and costisol (too much can risk having a mental illness like depressions). –> if stress isn’t managed, it can affect people both psychologically and psychically
poor self-efficacy
vulnerability factor for depression and or anxiety, ability to cope and engage and control thoughts and events in life.
social risk factors
cultural expectations, social and economic factors, social iso
disorgansied attachement
in childhood can lead to social isolation in adulthood, ==> poor social skills, trouble making/maintaing relationships, poor emotional regulations, lack of resilience, aggressive behaviour
