Continuity vs. Discontinuity
- Continuity: development is continuous through life
- Discontinuity: rapid, discrete changes in development
Active vs. Passive enviornment
- Active: induviduals activley seek out envionrment that are rewarding to them
- Passive: we are impacted by enviornemtn and we are less able to shape said enviornments
Stability vs. Change
- Stability: development occurs over time
- Change: rapid chages in development
Psychosocial Crises
each period of life has a unique challenge or crisis that the person who reaches it must face
- successful development involves dealing/resolving the goals and demands of each [sychological crises in positive ways
Trust vs. Mistrust
Birth-12-18 months: Trust vs. Mistrust: the child develops a feeling of trust towards caregivers
Autonomy vs. Shame
18 months to 3 years: Autonomy vs. Shame: the child learns what can and connot be controlled and develops a sense of free will
Initiative vs. Guilt
3-6 years: Initiative vs. Guilt: the child learns to become independent bu exploring and manipulating and taking action
Industry vs. Inferiority
6-12 years: Industry vs. Inferiority: the child learns to do things well or correctly according to satdards set by others, particularly in school
Identity vs. Role Confusion
12-18 years: Identity vs. Role Confusion: the adolescent deevelops a well-defined and positive self in relation to others
Intamicy vs. Isolation:
19-40 years: Intamicy vs. Isolation: the person develops the ability to give and recieve love and to make long term commitments
Generativity vs, Stagnation:
40-65 years: Generativity vs, Stagnation: the person develops an intrest in guiding the development of the next gerneration often by becoking a parent
Ego integrity vs. Despair
65-death: Ego integrity vs. Despair: the person develops acceptance of how one has lived
Social Learning Theory:
young children frequently learn behaviors through imitation (ex: bobo doll experiment)
Constructivism
children progress through four stages of cognitive development
Sensorimotor
Birth-2 years: children experience the world through their fundamental senses
