psych 101 midterm 2 Flashcards
what is the information proccessing model?
The memory model that explains that information is taken in by senses an d stored in the sensory memory. The memory is then encoded ito tthe working memory which temporarily holds the info and allows you to “think” about it. From there the memory is sent to the long term memory for relatively permanent storage
How long can you hold information in the sensory memory?
1/2 second for visual information and 2-4 seconds for auditory
How many items can you store in the working memory?
5-9 items
What is the phonological loop?
The “voice” that repeats what we want to keep in our active working memory.
What is the visuospatial sketchpad?
The place that stores images and spatial relations in our working memory
What is the parallal distributed processing model?
the model in which all information is stored as a webof thoughts and ideas and that it is all connected.
What is automatic processing?
Encoding information with little conscious awareness or effort ie the route you walk home
What is effortfull processing?
Intentionally encoding information into careful attention and conscious effort. ie studying
What is the spacing effect?
facilitated encoding of materials through rehearsal situations spread out over time. ie learning info and then reviewing before exams. more effective than massed practice
What is massed practice?
Cramming. learning and practicing all the information at once. ie staying up to study all the course materials instead of learing it through out the year right before an exam. Less effectivw than the spacing effect
What is semantic code?
cognitive representation of info or an event based on the meaning
How does one record non verbal information?
using the phonological or visual codes
How does one generally record verbal information
Semantic codes
What is Explicit Memory?
Memory with a conscious recall. ie something you were trying to remember
What is Implicit memory?
Memorys without conscious recall ie a reaction to food that had made you sick in the past
