What 3 components make up the “Self”
Self knowledge, interpersonal self & agent self.
What is self knowledge?
The internal representation of you. Unique to only you.
What 4 sub components make up self knowledge?
1.introspection
2.self perception
3.looking glass self
4.social comparison
What is introspection?
A privilege access of the self by reflecting on stores of knowledge that allow you to construct an identity.
What is self perception?
people develop their attitudes by observing their own behavior and concluding what attitudes must have caused it.
What is the looking glass concept?
the process where individuals base their sense of self on how they believe others view them. (Cooley 1902)
What is social comparison?
We are social animals, who we are and what we do is judged through contextual comparisons of others capabilities.
What is the interpersonal self?
the characteristics that a person expresses when in the presence of others in order to gain social connections.
What is the self?
The internal phenomenon that is unique to you.
What is (personal) identity?
The expression and manifestation of the self.
What is public identity?
The way your self and identity are perceived by others.
What is the link between social identity theory and Maslow (1942) hierarchy of needs?
The psychological needs are abstained through group membership.
What is social group comparison?
Comparing or putting down other social groups in order to gratify one’s self to gain SE.
What is optimal distinctiveness?
Group distinction is needed to evaluate and mange the self. If there were no social group identity it’s hard to obtain a public identity.
What is self-esteem (SE)?
The degree to which one evaluates the self and how we judge we are accepted socially. (Leary & Baumeister 2000).
What are characteristics of high self esteem?
Takes risks, high self value & no set high demands.
What are Characteristics of low self esteem?
Less confident & focus on self protection.
What are the positive illusions of HSE?
1.overestimates qualities
2.overestimate control on events
3.unrealistically optimistic
What is self presentation?
Behaviour that transmits a specific version of the self that is seen as being socially acceptable to obtain a positive social identity.
How is social media linked to the “self”
Social media is used to create a digital self that we think will be desirable socially.
How are selfies linked to the “self”?
Selfies are the online self presentation which isn’t always accurate.
What is a social psychology issue involving selfies?
No taxonomy.
What is the importance of dating apps in regards to the self?
Swipe base environment and allows pre screening to social connections based on others social identity.
What are the 3 self deception strategies?
1.self serving bias
2.selective focus
3.selective comparison
What is self serving bias?
Interpreting success events internally and blaming failures on external factors.
What is selective focus?
Recollection is better for things that reflect positively on the self.
What is selective comparison?
We tend to compare our self to people who are slightly worse than us. (Downward comparison)
What is the agent self
The part of the self involved with actions and making decisions.
