PSY2205 Lecture 3: Neo-Freudian theories Flashcards
1
Q
How do neo-Freudians slightly agree but also adapt the theories of Freud?
A
- Neo-Freudians agree that early children is a very important time of development, but they argue development is extended into adulthood
- Focuses on child-adult relationships rather than just structure of mind
- Argues for the idea of a cognitive unconscious, but not a motivated unconscious as Freud describes (unconscious motivated by Id and sexual desires and death wishes)
2
Q
What are the three main disagreements with Freuds theory?
A
- Negative deterministic picture of human nature, largely controlled by things out of our control (our unconscious). Neo-Freudians view behaviour as goal-orientated instead.
- Freud over-emphasised early childhood with no room for later influence
- Freud over-emphasised instinctual influences with no room for social or cultural influences.
