PSY 319 Flashcards
What are the Pros and Cons of Correlational designs?
Pros: No manipulation of variables lets it have high external validity, establishes if a relationship exists
Cons: Third variable problem, directionality problem, low internal validity, cannot asses causality
What are the pros and cons of Internet Surveys?
Pros: Efficient to reach a large amount of people quickly, individualized responses,
Cons: Hard to control composition of sample, sample may not be reflective of population, may not be representative
What are the pros and cons of a Case Study
Pros: detailed and vivid, lets us examine rare cirumstances, identify unique variables, not averaged over a diverse group
Cons: Limited generalizations, lacks internal and external validity, prone to biases and subjective interpretations
What is the main effect, give an example
A main effect is the average difference among certain levels of a independent variable on a dependent variable.
Example: Testing if tutoring and extra homework improve grades. There are two main effects if tutoring improves grade, or if extra homework improves grades
What is an interaction and give an example
An interaction is when one factor is dependent and influences a second factor. Drug interactions is an example of this.
What test for study with two nominal variables
Chi square of independence
What test for study with 2 continuous variables
Pearsons r correlation
What test for a mixed variable test with two independent variables
t-test
What test for a mixed variable test with more than two independent variables
AVONA
What test for Between Subjects
Independent
What test for Within subject
Dependent/ repeated measures
