How are colics classified?

A

simple medical = mild, resolves with tx
complex medical = more specific tx, may be dehydrated with an electrolyte imbalance
non-strangulating = obstruction does not compromise vasculature
strangulating = obstruction compromises vasculature
infarction = associated with migrating ascarids

How can a strangulating obstruction be differentiated from visceral rupture?

A

Abdominocentesis

Strangulating lesion: serosanguinous, high WBC, high TP, high lactate

A

Lactate is a product of anaerobic respiration and is produced in response to ischaemic damage
