PSS Flashcards
How are colics classified?
simple medical = mild, resolves with tx
complex medical = more specific tx, may be dehydrated with an electrolyte imbalance
non-strangulating = obstruction does not compromise vasculature
strangulating = obstruction compromises vasculature
infarction = associated with migrating ascarids
How can a strangulating obstruction be differentiated from visceral rupture?
Abdominocentesis
Strangulating lesion: serosanguinous, high WBC, high TP, high lactate
Why is lactate high in fluid from a strangulating colic?
Lactate is a product of anaerobic respiration and is produced in response to ischaemic damage
What type of effusion would be associated with a septic peritonitis?
high glucose and low pH
