The Psychodynamic approach Flashcards
Who made up the idea of the psyche?
Sigmund Freud
What is the Id(…)?
Id (0-18mths): Unconscious, the baby desire stuff, pleasure principle.
What is the ego(…)?
Ego (18mths-3yrs): Conscious, Reality principle, the child realises what they can/cant do but still try to achieve it
What is the Superego(…)?
Superego (3-5yrs): unconscious, morality principle, feelings of guilt when performing wrong actions
Who created the psychosexual stages?
Sigmund Freud
What is the first stage(…)?
Oral stage (0-18 mths) - babies at this age desire to eat/chew/bite/suck (mouth involved activities)
What is the second stage(…)?
Anal stage (18mths - 2 yrs) - children are now undergoing potty training at this age which they desire to hold/release their feaces which gives them pleasure
What is the third stage(…)?
Phallic stage (3yrs-6yrs) - boys at this age are now aware of having a penis; which they have pleasure playing/fiddling with.
Oedipus complex: a boy will have unconsious sexual desires for their mother. Is in competition, but also fears his father of castration
Electra complex: a girl will believe that she was castrated at birth and will have penis envy and instead has unconsious sexual desires for opposite sex parents
What is the fourth stage(…)?
Latency stage (6yrs - puberty): the boy’s sexual desires will be dormant as the id will not desire anything sexually in this period
What is the fifth stage(…)?
Genital stage (12yrs - maturity): The id will now reactivate and makes powerful demands for heterosexual sexual desires
What are the types of defence mechanisms?
Repression - to push a thought into the unconscious section of your mind
Denial - to not acknowledge the truth of the event and claiming that it is false
Displacement - to turn your anger to a neutral object and release it on that object
What are the advantages of the Psychodynamic approach?
- Included many case studies in his research which was full of rich information (e.g. Little Hans)
- Developed free association (talk-therapy) which is a way of relieving stress and reducing symptoms
What are the disadvantages?
- Case studies were not replicable and made the results of it unreliable
- Methods used were not scientific meaning it is less reliable.
