Provisional Crown Fabrication for FCC Flashcards
Provisional Restoration
worn for various periods of time which maintains esthetics, provides masticating surfaces, protects hard/soft tissues prior to definitive prosthesis
What are the requirements for a provisional restoration?
- biologic/pulpal protection
- mechanical/occlusal stability
- esthetic satisfaction
Pre-fabricated provisional restoration
can only be used for single tooth restorations
Custom provisional restoration
used for single or multiple tooth restorations
PMMA Advantages
- wear resistance
- good strength
- color stability
- polishability
- esthetics
- low cost
PMMA Disadvantages
- high curing heat
- polymerization shrinkage
- residual monomer
- working time
- odor
“Imagine your mama curling her hair in the afternoon. Her hair is shrinking into curls, causing monomers of hair and odor to drift into the room. It takes her a long time.”
PEMA Advantages
- low curing heat
- good marginal fit
- lower polymerization shrinkage than PMMA
- low cost
PEMA Disadvantages
- wear resistance
- esthetics
- color stability
- unpleasant odor
- EXTENDED WORKING TIME
Bis-acryl Composite Advantages
- low curing temp
- low polymerization shrinkage
- high tensile strength
- high surface hardness
- improved marginal fit
- good color stability
- minimal odor
- high polishability
Bis-acryl Composite Disadvantages
- expensive
- difficult to repair
- BRITTLE-NOT GOOD FOR LONG SPAN
VLC Composite Resin Advantages
- low polymerization shrinkage
- high tensile strength
- minimal exothermic setting rxn
- good color stability
- no odor
- easy to add material
VLC Composite Resin Disadvantages
- expensive/need a machine
- limited shade selection
- low marginal integrity
- polishability
Types of Direct Provisionals Used at MUSoD
- pre-fab crowns
2. pull-down matrices
Pull-down technique
- take an alginate impression and make a cast before tooth prep
- Use a vacuum former over the cast with a 0.5 mm square thermoplastic sheet
- place two vent holes over the non-functional cusps
- put vaseline over teeth
- put liquid into retainer and have patient bite down
- during curing, do and in-and-out motion to avoid locking
- check setting of material
- mark interproximal contact of untrimmed provisional
- trim using a lab handpiece
- mark finish line
- open contact
- open margin
- check occlusion with and without crown
- add anatomic groove detail
- polish
