What products are used for waxing?
Foot sanitiser, alcohol wipe, skin cleanser, talcum powder, pre-wax oil, post wax cleanser, soothing cream and wax solvent.
What equipments are used for waxing?
Headband, linen, tweezers, glass bowls, hand mirror, magnifying lamp and waste bin.
What disposables are used for waxing?
Paper towels, gloves, apron, large and small wooden spatulas, bonded or cloth strips, cotton pads, tissues and cotton buds.
How do we maintain the wax temperature?
- Constantly checking the temperature on your wrist before applying onto the client’s skin
- Check the consistency of your wax
- Check the thermostat
What strip should be used at a ________ temperature.
Lower.
Approx 43 degrees.
To prevent wax from dripping, where should we wipe our spatula after dipping?
Wipe on one side of the spatula, tip of the other side and sides.
Where do you support the skin to be waxed?
Above the area to be waxed.
At what angle do you hold the spatula for application?
45 degree angle
Why must we leave a 2cm margin at the top of the strip wax?
To give us space to hold the wax strip to pull off.
Which direction must we rub the strip wax on the skin?
In the direction of hair growth.
Why must we support the skin when waxing?
To avoid bruising and discomfort.
In which direction do we pull off the strip wax?
Against the direction of hair growth. Parallel to the skin/close of the body, never up.
Why do we apply pressure or rub the area, after we pull off the wax?
To oo the any stinging sensation.
How many times can we wax the same area?
No more than twice.
How can we check for any hairs we may have missed?
Run our hands over the waxed area, use magnifying lamp or ask the client to inspect.
Do we wax the front or back of legs first?
Front
When should we wax feet and toes?
Until after the back of legs have been completed.
In what pattern do we wax a half leg?
Middle - Section 1, 2 & 3 ankle up to the knee
Inner side - section 3 & 4 ankle up to knee
Outer side - section 5 & 6 ankle up to knee
Under knee - section 1, 2 & 3 from inner side, outer side and middle
Over knee - one section on knee cap
Where would you test the wax temperature on your client?
The inside of the ankle.
Where would you test the wax temperature on yourself?
On your wrist.
What do we use to remove wax and residue stickiness from the skin?
Wax cleanser.
In what pattern do we wax the knee?
Chart pattern 1,2 & 3.
1 - Inner side (right)
2 - Outer side (left)
3 - Middle
In what pattern do we wax the right/upper leg?
Same pattern as half leg wax. Chart pattern 1-6.
1,2,3 - Middle location, upwards from the bottom
3 & 4 - Inner thigh, upwards from the bottom
5 & 6 - Outer thigh, upwards from the bottom
What is the popliteal space?
The diamond-shaped space at the back of the knee joint.
When it comes to waxing the popliteal space, why must it be done with great care?
Due to the proximity of the lymph nodes and blood vessels.
How should the popliteal space be waxed?
With small or narrow strips of wax and carefully removed.
In what pattern do we wax the arm?
In 4 sections starting from the inside of the arm to the outside. As the hair grows in multiple directions, it makes it harder to remove the wax in a horizontal motion.
How should we apply and remove the wax for arms?
Apply in short lengths following the hair growth in sections. Remove the strips against the hair growth while paying particular attention to stretching as the arm bruises easily.
How long should a half leg wax take?
15-20 minutes
How long should a full leg wax take?
35-40 minutes
How long should arm wax take?
20 minutes
How long should underarm wax take?
15 minutes
How long should a bikini wax take?
15 minutes
How long should eyebrow wax take?
10-15 minutes
How long should lip wax take?
5 minutes
At what temperature should hot wax be used at?
Approximately 50 degrees. Care must be taken to avoid burns.
The amount of hot wax to be scooped onto the spatula should be ___________
Thick
In what direction of hair growth should hot wax be applied?
Against the hair growth.
How must we apply hot wax?
Against the hair growth in semi-circular motion, making a small circle patch on the skin, making sure that the edges are thicker than the middle.
After applying the hot wax we should ______________________.
Allow the patch to solidify slightly then press firmly on the patch to ensure it has solidify and to mould it into the hair growth.
Why must hot wax not be allowed to harden completely?
It will crumble, stick and will not come off easily.
What should you do if the hot wax was not pulled off completely?
Turn the hot wax piece that was pulled off to the clean side and press it onto the left over wax to remove it.
What hand should be used to support the skin?
Non-working hand.
What finger do we use to flick the bottom edge of the hot wax up?
Thumb or bent index finger.
Why do we not pick the edge of the hot wax?
It may cause pain to the client.
What fingers do we use to pull off the hot wax?
Grip the edge between thumb and forefinger.
In which direction do we pull off the hot wax?
Against the direction of hair growth. Do not pull up into the air as it will snap the hair, bruise and graze the skin.
Can we overlap hot wax patches?
No. It may result in a heat build-up which will cause the client discomfort.
In what pattern do we wax the bikini area?
Section 1,2 & 3.
1 - Above the tendon; Outer side (right)
2 - Below the tendon; Inner side (left)
3 - Along the tendon; Middle
What should be done if there are long and curly hair(s) on the bikini area?
Trimmed to approximately 1cm prior to waxing.
What should be used to protect the client’s underpants for bikini waxing?
Paper towel or tissues. Half Tucked underneath their underpants and half folded on top.
Do we keep reapplying wax to remove stubborn hairs on the bikini area?
No. It will cause bruising. Stubborn hairs can be removed by tweezing.
What should be applied on before waxing if skin tags were present?
Petroleum jelly. Prevents pulling off the tag.
In what arm position should the client be in for underarm wax?
Client’s arm should be raised over their head,bent at 90 degree angle.
Where should paper towel or tissue be placed to protect the client’s undergarments?
Along the edge of the bra.
In what pattern do we wax the underarms?
In 3 sections.
1 - upper section of underarm
2 - bottom section of the underarm
3 - middle of the underarm
In what two directions do underarm hairs grow?
Hair that grows towards the arm and hair that grows towards the body. (Up or down)
What can face waxing cause?
The skin may stretch thus causing lines. Especially in the eye and lip areas.
In what direction do we apply and remove eyebrow wax?
Apply in the direction of hair growth and remove against the direction of hair growth.
In what pattern do we wax the lip?
In 3 sections.
1 - left side of upper lip
2 - right side of upper lip
3 - middle section of the upper lip (under nose)
Why is retrieving feedback from clients important ?
Positive feedback - Ensure continuation of high level service.
Negative feedback - Used to adjust the service provided.
What kind of feedback should be obtained from clients?
Service provided, the processes and products used, the end result of treatment.
What should you do when you receive feedback?
- Thank the client for their advice or feedback
- Try to avoid being defensive
- Use non-emotive language to explain any misunderstanding
- Tell the client how they will use the feedback positively
