Protozoa summary Flashcards
Protozoa
Eukaryotes, unicellular
organelles of locomotion - cilia, flagella, pseudopodia
most free living
axsexual reproduktion - fission and budding
sexual reproduction - gamogong ( union of gametes), sporulation
Apicomplexa
- sporozoa
- obligate intracellular parasites
- sexual and asexual phases
- gliding locomotion
explain the general life cycle of apicomplexa
List the three group of apicomplexa
Coccidian enteric
Tissue coccida
Class Haematozoea
Coccidian enteric
Highly host specific
most develop in digestive tract, some in kidney, liver or gall bladder
Disease of intensive husbandry –> watery to bloody diarrhoea w/ high morbidity
self limiting
explain tissue coccidia
indirect lifecycle (mm 2 hosts) Gamogony occurs in definite host (carnivore) merogony and cyst - formation occurs in intermediate host
Class Haematozoea
- transmitted by blood sucking arthropods
- order piroplasmoridia –> tick fever
- small pear shaped
- do not have spores, flagella, cilia
- asecual reproduction by binary fission
- anaemia, fever, toxic shock-like syndrome
- loss of condition, respiratory distress, diarrhoea
List the two genera of coccidian enteric
Order Eimeria (birds, ruminants and marsupials) Order Isospora (carnivores, people, pigs)
list examples of coccidian enteric
Cryptospordium spp (c. parfum)
list examples of tissue coccidia
toxoplasma gondii (cats) Neospora apps (canids) sarcocystis spp (dog, humans)
List examples of class haematozoea
Babesia spp
Theileia spp
Cryptosporidium spp
C. parvum
Coccidian enteric
mucous epithelium in ileum, stomach and respiratory tracts
small ocysts; parasite develops quickly and flood w/oocysts
transient disease, especially w/ stress and crowding
generally self limiting
zoonotic
explain toxoplasma gondii
cats
Tissue coccidia
- begin infections except in immune suppression and pregnancy
- brain, cardiac m, skeletal m, tissue cysts
- Transmission by ingestion of sporulated oocysts or tissue cysts, transplacentaly
Neospora spp
neospora canids tissue coccidia - gamogony - hindlimb paralysis in pups - intermediate host = cattle an horse = major abortion issue
Explain sarcocystis spp
- muscle cysts in wide range of mammals
- dogs and humans
- muscle cysts in wide range of mammals
