Protozoa Flashcards
What are the 5 intestinal protozoa that cause diarrhea?
What do they cause?
- Guardia lamblia
- Entamoeba histolytica
- Crytosporidium
- Cyclospora cayatanesis
- Isospora belli
GECCI
Bowel obstruction and diarrhea
What are the protozoa of the CNS?
- Toxoplasma gondii; congenital toxoplasmosis
- Trypansoma brucei
- Naegieria fowleri
What are the protozoa of the blood?
- Trypanosoma cruzi; chagas disease
- Babesia
- Plasmodium (malaria); malariae, knowles, vivax and ovale, flaciparum,
- Leishmoniasis
WEIRD FUCKING PROTOZOANS
Trichomonas Vaginalis
describe parasites
- free living
- Single cell
- Eurkaryotic with a cytoplasmic membrane and organelles (1-2 nuclei), mT, food vaculoes and ER
how do parasites eat?
ingest solid peices of food through small mouth called cytosome
When placed into a hostile environment, the protozoan can become a ____, which is its armored form.
CYST
What is the ingested form of a protozoan?
CYST
After we ingest a protozoan, as a CYST, what does it do?
Transforms into its motile form, a
TROPHOZOITE
We ingest parasites as cysts. When they enter out environment, they revert back to their motile form called TROPHOZOITE.
What does the trophozoite do?
Can:
- Invade intestinal mucosa, causing erosion
- Penetrate portal blood circulation and form abscesses in the liver, where it can then go through [diaphragm => lung]. This is where it can cause death
What 2 mechanisms can protozoa fuck?
asexually => DNA replication => fission (divide into 2 cells)
sexually by fusion of 2 cells => exchange DNA => separate again
This is the “classic amoeba.” It is more commonly seen in the developing world and in immigrants to the US. Most infections are asymptomatic, as the amoeba lives at peace with its host.
Entamoeba histolytica
