15
Q

Life cycle of Plasmodium

A

1)Female Anopheles mosquito bites human - secretes saliva to prevent clotting - introduces Plasmodium in the form of sporozoites
2)Travel to liver & attack hepatocytes - reproduce asexually - lyse hepatocyte & released as merozoites
3)Merozoites attack RBC & form ring like structure called trophozoite

4)Reproduce asexually & form merozoites - lyse RBC releasing merozoites - repeat 3) & 4)
OR
4)Form gametocyte, taken up by uninfected female Anopheles mosquito - fuse to form zygote

16
Q

What is the definite host of Plasmodium?

A

Female Anopheles mosquito

17
Q

Diagnosis of malaria

A

Blood film - Giemsa stain - headphone-like inclusion (trophozoite)

18
Q

Symptoms of malaria

A

Intermittent fevers, anaemia, splenomegaly, fever, nausea, vomiting, rigoris, headache, coma

19
Q

What was previously used to treat malaria?

A

Tonic water - quinine

20
Q

What attracts mosquitoes?

A

Body odour, microbiome, & temperature (pregnant women)

21
Q

What causes Chagas disease?

A

Trypanosoma cruzi - bite from Reduviid bugs/kissing bugs/vampire bugs - South & Central America

22
Q

What causes babesiosis?

A

Babesia microti from deer ticks

23
Q

What causes Toxoplasmosis?

A

Toxoplasma gondii - cat faeces

24
Q

What is Babesiosis?

A

Babesia microti infects RBC - replicates into 4 - Maltese Cross formation seen in blood film - fever & haemolytic anaemia

25
Q

What is cryptosporidium?

A

Thick-walled oocyte in water (not UV treated - run-off from livestock) - grows in intestine - released into the environment as oocytes

26
Q

What are the definite hosts of Toxoplasma gondii?

A

Cats - found in faeces

27
Q

Human impact of toxoplasmosis?

A

30-50% humans in contact - dangerous in immunocompromised & pregnant women

28
Q

Impact of toxoplasmosis on mice?

A

Mice eat cat faeces - lose fear of cats - cat eats mice
