Protozoa Flashcards
Sarcodines:
Amoeboid Protozoa. Move by changing shape—cytoplasms flow w/it.
Ciliates:
Ciliated Protozoa. Move by cilia beating back and forth.
Balandtidium coli:
Ciliates. Not that big of a deal
Entamoeba hystolytica, Naegleria & Acanthamoeba
Sarcodines. G.I. problems; other 2 are deadly, typically from water sources (kids swimming in lakes and uncured pools)
Mastigophorans:
Flagellated Protozoa. Moves by flagella.
Sporozoans:
Apicomplexan Protozoa. Primarily nonmotile.
Plasmodium, toxoplasma gondii, cryptosporidium, and cyclospora.
Sporozoans.
What are the two organelles that protozoa do not have?
Cell walls and chloroplasts
What do protozoa require? What form will they go into if the environment is unfavorable?
Moisture. Cysts.
What is a trophozoite? When are they released?
A protozoan’s active feeding stage. When a cyst breaks apart.
How do protozoans reproduce?
Simple cell division, some exhibit multiple fission within host cells. Most protozoa sexually reproduce in their lifecycle.
