what are protocols?
protocols are a set of rules.
these rules define how devices communicate and share data.
protocols have their own methods. what do they determine?
how data is formatted when sent
how that is compressed
the size of message and speed of transmission
how to check if the are any errors in data
what is handshaking?
a client asks for access, the server then grants it, this means the protocol has been agreed.
what is a packet?
a collection of data forming part of a message
what is packet switching?
it is sent individually across a network and then meet up at the final destination making up the message.
what is HTTP?
Hypertext Transfer Protocol- used for accessing and receiving web pages in the form of HTML files.
what is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol- transferring files online/moving data from computer to computer.
what is POP3?
Post Office Protocol- receiving emails, all users can download all emails from the server.
