Protocols Flashcards
What is a Protocol?
protocols are a set of rules or procedures that govern how data is transmitted between devices over a network.
What is the purpose of Protocols?
1.Communication across different devices
2.Ensuring reliability and efficiency
What does TCP/IP stand for?
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
a suite of protocols.
What is the purpose of TCP and IP?
1.TCP is responsible for breaking data into packets, ensuring reliability
2.IP handles addressing and routing of these packets
What is a packet?
A small unit of data transmitted over a network
How do packets travel across the internet?
They travel through routers
What do routers do?
Routers inspect the header info un each packet and determine the most efficient path
What does Quality of Service mean?
Overall Performance of a network
What factors affect Quality of service?
1.Bandwidth
2.Latency
3.Packet Loss
What other common protocols besides TCP/IP are there?
HTTP, ARP and FTP
What does CSMA/CD stand for?
(Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection)
What does CSMA/CD mean?
Why do we need IP?
Will route packets
Do protocols work solo
No Protocols need several layer to work together to operate as smooth as possible
