LANS Flashcards
What is the purpose of LAN?
What is a LAN
What are the different types of Ethernet LAN access devices?
Hubs, Switches and Routers
What are the different types of LAN transmissions?
Unicast, Multicast, Broadcast
What is Unicast?
A unicast transmission is sent to a single destination device.
What is Multicast transmission?
A multicast transmission is sent to a group of devices.
What is a broadcast transmission
A broadcast transmission is sent to all devices on the network.
Name 2 common aspects of LAN standards
All LAN standards use the same 48-bit MAC address length.
All LAN standards support broadcast and multicast addressing.
What are virtual LANs?
Virtual LANs (VLANs) use software to make it appear as if devices are physically connected, even if they are not.
What is the use of VLANs?
This is useful for limiting broadcast traffic to a specific group of devices.
What is Power over Ethernet?
Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows power to be delivered to devices over Ethernet cabling.
What is the use of PoE?
This is useful for devices such as Ethernet telephones and wireless access points that may not be located near power outlets.
How is data transmitted on a LAN?
Data is transmitted via a Network Interface Card (NIC).
