Protists Flashcards
protist
an organism that belongs to the kingdom Protista
heterotroph
an organism that gets food by eating other organisms or their byproducts and that cannot make organic compounds from inorganic materials
eukaryote
an organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus, eukaryotes include all living organisms other than the eubacteria and archaebacteria
decomposer
an organism especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material
parasite
an organism that feeds on an organism of another species (the host) and that usually harms the host; the host never benefits from the presence of the parasite
host
an organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter
fungi
a kingdom made up of nongreen, eukaryotic organisms that have no means of movement, reproduce by using spores, and get food by breaking down substances in their surroundings and absorbing the nutrients
spore
a reproductive cell or multicellular structure that is resistant to stressful environmental conditions and thst can develop into an adult without fusing with another cell
lichen
a mass of fungal and algal cells that grow together in a symbolic relationship and that are usually found on rocks or trees
nonvascular plant
the three groups of plants (liverworts, hornworts, and mosses) that lack specialized conducting tissues and true roots, stems, and leaves
vascular plant
a plant that has specialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another
gymnosperm
a woody, vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit
angiosperm
a flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit
photosynthesis
the process when plants use the sun’s energy to make food, chlorophyll in plants gather sunlight
cellular respiration
the process in which cell take food and break apart bonds and energy is released
transpiration
the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves and where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere
tropism
the turning of all or part of an organism in a particular direction in response to an external stimulus
gravitropism
is a coordinated process of differential growth by a plant or fungus in response to gravity pulling on it
phototropism
the orientation of a plant or other organism in response to light, either toward the source of light or away from it
asexual reproduction
is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism; and inherit the genes of that parent only
toxoplasmosis
a disease caused by toxoplasmas transmitted through under cooked meat, or in soil or cat poop
malaria
an intermittent and remittent fever caused by a protozoan parasite that invades the red blood cells, the parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes in many tropical and subtropical regions
giardia
an infection marked by abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea, it is caused by a microscopic parasite that is found worldwide especially in areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water
