Invertebrate animals Flashcards
vertebrates
an animal that has a backbone
invertebrates
an animal that does not have a backbone
consumer
an organism that eats other organisms or organic matter
ganglion
a mass of nerve cells
gut
the digestive tract
coelom
a body cavity that contains the internal organs
bilateral symmetry
the two sides of its body mirror each other, it has equal right and left sides
radical symmetry
body is organized around the center like the spokes of a wheel
asymmetry
its body is not organized around a center
cnidaria
an aquatic invertebrate animal of the phylum Cnidaria which comprises the coelenterates
flatworms
a worm of a phylum which includes the planarians together together with a parasitic flukes and tapeworms and they have a simple flattened body
roundworms
they are a diverse animal phylum inhabiting a broad range of environments
mollusks
an invertebrate of a large phylum which includes snails, slugs, mussels, and octopuses and they live in aquatic or damp habitats
open circulatory system
blood is pumped by a heart into the body cavities where tissues are surrounded by the blood
closed circulatory system
they have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness and in this type of system blood is pumped by a heart through vessels and does not normally fill body cavities
annelid worms
they live in a large phylum with over 22,000 extant species including rag worms, earthworms, and leeches
exoskeleton
a rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals especially arthropods providing both support and protection
compound eye
compound eyes are called arthropod eyes because they are made up of repeating units each of which functions as a separate visual receptor
antenna
it is one of a pair of slender, movable, segmented sensory organs on the head of insects
metamorphosis
it is a change of the forms or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means
endoskeleton
it is an internal skeleton such as the bony skeletons of vertebrates
water vascular system
it is a network of water vessels in the body
sponges
sponges draw in a current of water to extract nutrients and oxygen
