Protista Flashcards

Everything

1
Q

What three groups does protists consist of

A

Plant like protists which are autotrophic as they contain chlorophyll and produce their own food through photosynthesis can be unicellular or multicellular

Animal like protists(protozoa) mostly heterotrophic or parasitic and move by using pseudopodia, cilia or flagella

Fungus like protists are decomposers which make them heterotrophs, digest food by releasing digestive enzymes into organic matter and absorbing the nutrients

Q

What is the life cycle of malaria

A

Female mosquitoes bites human and sucks blood containing plasmodia parasites
Plasmodia reproduces sexually in female mosquitoes
Female mosquitoes bites a human and transfers the paslmodia parasite into blood
Plasmodia travels to the liver and enters liver cells
Plasmodia reproduces asexually I’m cells
Plasmodia hurts out ofnluver cells and enters bloodstream
Once in blood plasmodia enters the red blood cells and reproduces asexually again and burts into into bloodstream again

Q

Treatment of malaria

A

Modern medicine- anti malarial drugs such as quinine, chloroquine and merpacrine, they drugs interrupts the parasites life cycle
In severe cases blood transfusion will be necessary

Traditional-herb sweet wormwood-stops multiplication of parasite in liver and blood cells

Q

What are the symptoms of malaria

A

Take a two weeks for flu like symptoms to show
Experience shiverings cause by when parasites bursts out of cells
High fever(depending on stage of parasite)
Sweating (depending on stage of parasite)
Convulsions may occur which can lead to coma and eventually death
Headaches and vomiting
Liver and spleen become infected which leads to jaundice
Continuous rupture of red blood cells lead to anaemia
Blockage may occur in blood vessels of major organs e.g kidneys and brain with may lead to death
