Fungi Flashcards
Everything
Examples of fungi
Bread moulds Yeasts Mildew Rusts Mushrooms
What are the two main groups of fungi
Unicellular (yeasts)
Multicellular(mushrooms)
Characteristics of fungi
All eukaryotic
Lack chlorophyll so they are heterotrophic saphrophytes, they feed on whatever they grow on by secreting enzymes to break down complex into simple nutrients e.g glucose
Simple nutrients are absorbed through wall into fungal body
Most filamentous fungi are frequently multinucleate
Cell walls are made of chitin
Reproduce both sexually and sexually, reproduction is accomplished by release if sexual or asexual spores
What is multicellular fungi made of
Intertwined threads called hyphae
What is all hyphae together referred to as
Mycelium
What is septa
Hyphae that has cross walls
Which fungi does not have septa
Bread mould
How many hyphae does fungi have
One or more
What does hyphae form when it fuses together
Fleshy fruiting body
What is thrush known as
Candidiasis and is caused by yeast fungus called Candida Ablicans
Where does thruah occur
Warm and moist areas
Vagina,mouth, male genitals
Symptoms of thrush infection
Mouth become a red and swollen whit white or blush pockets
Pimply nappy rash with sharp outlines
Painful burning and itching in vagina and white discharge
Tip of penis becomes red or swollen
Causes of thrush
Immune system is weak
Skin is kept moist for too long and when people wear tight clothes for too long
Antibiotics may kill useful bacteria that kept candidasfungus under control
Sexual intercourse which may irritate skin
Perfumes of soaps that change pH of skin
High blood sugar levels such as I’m diabetics
Eating foods contain refined white sugar and processes carbohydrates
