Protista Flashcards
What kind of organisms are they
Eukaryotic organisms
What kind of cells are protist
Unicellular and multicellular
Protists are divided into three groups
Name and explain them
• Protozoa( zooplankton): unicellular heterotrophic, animal-like protists , e.g. Amoeba.
• Algae(phytoplankton): plant-like protists that are autotrophic, e.g. green algae.
• Slime moulds(fungi like protists ): fungus-like protists that are heterotrophic decomposers.
Give the characteristics of protists
• Are eukaryotic (has a true nucleus and has membrane-bound or
• Are unicellular.( also multicellular)
• Have pseudopodia, cilia or flagella to assist in locomotion.
•prefer aquatic and moist environments
• Reproduce asexually.
•autotrophic and heterotrophic
What structures allow them to move
- Cillia- these tiny hair flap together to help the organism move
flagella - a unique like appendage
that moves back and forth
Pseudopodia(false feet)- extended part of the cell body that aids in movement
