protist, plant, fungi Flashcards
Protist
An organism that belongs to the Kingdom Protista.
Heterotroph
an organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances.
Eukaryote
A eukaryote is any organism whose cells have a cell nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes. Eukaryotes belong to the domain Eukaryota or Eukarya, and can be unicellular or multicellular organisms.
Decomposer
an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.
Parasite
an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense.
Host
an animal or plant on or in which a parasite or commensal organism lives.
Fungi
any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter, including molds, yeast, mushrooms, and toadstools.
Spore
A spore is a unit of sexual or asexual reproduction that may be adapted for dispersal and for survival, often for extended periods of time, in unfavourable conditions.
Lichen
a simple slow-growing plant that typically forms a low crustlike, leaflike, or branching growth on rocks, walls, and trees.
Nonvascular plant
The three groups of plants that lack specialized conducting tissues and trues roots, stems, and leaves.
Vascular plant
A plant that has specialized tissues that conduct materials from one part of the plant to another.
Gymnosperm
A woody, vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by an ovary or fruit.
Angiosperm
A flowering plant that produces seeds within the fruit.
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food.
Cellular respiration
The process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food.
Transpiration
The process by which plants release water vapor into the air through stomata.
Tropism
The growth of all or part of an organism in response to an external stimulus, such as light.
Gravitropism
Is a turning or growth movement by a plant or fungus in response to gravity. It is a general feature of all higher and many lower plants as well as other organisms.
Phototropism
the orientation of a plant or other organism in response to light, either toward the source of light ( positive phototropism ) or away from it ( negative phototropism ).
Asexual Reproduction
Having no evident sex or sex organs; sexless. Relating to, produced by, or involving reproduction that occurs without the union of male and female gametes, as in binary fission or budding.
Toxoplasmosis
a disease caused by toxoplasmas, transmitted chiefly through undercooked meat, or in soil or cat feces. Symptoms generally pass unremarked in adults, but infection can be dangerous to unborn children.
Giardia
Giardia infection is an intestinal infection marked by abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea and bouts of watery diarrhea. Giardia infection is caused by a microscopic parasite that is found worldwide, especially in areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water.
