Bacteria and Viruses Flashcards
Prokaryote
An organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus.
Bacilli
A bacillus or bacilli form bacterium is a rod-shaped bacterium.
Cocci
A coccus is any bacterium that has a spherical, ovoid, or generally round shape.
Spirilla
Spirillum is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria in the family [Spirillaceae]] of the Nitrosomonadales of the Betaproteobacteria.
Nitrogen fixation
Nitrogen fixation is a process by which nitrogen in the Earth’s atmosphere is converted into ammonia or other molecules available to living organisms.
Endospore
A thick-walled protective spore that forms inside a bacterial cell and resists harsh conditions.
Binary Fission
A form of asexual reproduction in single-celled organism by which one cell divides into two cells of the same size.
Bioremediation
The biological treatment of hazardous waste by living organisms.
Antibiotic
Medicine used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms.
Pathogenic bacteria
Bacteria that cause disease.
Virus
A microscopic particle that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell.
Host
An organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter.
