Proteus Flashcards
1
Q
General characteristics of proteus?
A
- Non Lactose fermenters
- Urease +ve
- Non-capsulated
- Highly motile- swarms on culture media
- Contain O (somatic antigen) and H (flagellar antigen).
2
Q
Describe the pathogenesis of proteus.
A
- Highly motile may contribute to ability to invade urinary tract
- Fimbriae for uroepithelial colonization
- Urease hydrolyzes urea in urine into ammonium hydroxide increasing urinary Ph
-Encourage calculus(stone) formation
-Obstruct urine flow
-Bacteria in the calculus not reached by drugs
3
Q
List two clinical manifestations of proteus.
A
Wound infection
Urinary tract infection
4
Q
Describe culture of proteus. (which agar, and what do you see?)
A
Culture: Mac and BA
Non-Lactose fermenter, swarming and distinct fishy odour
5
Q
Gram stain?
A
Gram -ve
6
Q
State results for oxidase and urease test of proteus.
A
Oxidase -ve
Urease +ve
7
Q
Describe briefly result of TSI test.
A
Alkaline slant
Acid butt
Black colour (H2S produced)
8

Antibiotics against proteus?
A
Ampicillin
Cephalosporins
