Protests against the New Deal Flashcards
Who tended to support black people in civil rights campaigns more than the civil rights organisations themselves?
Communists and other left wing groups tended to do so more, such as when the NAACP refused to take a case of 9 young black men being accused of raping 2 white girls and, instead, communist lawyers took the case
Why was this support from communists also a double edged sword?
It gave opponents of civil rights (like that of the KKK and ‘red baiters’) a justification to crack down on them because of their links to communists
What were alternatives for support for black people during the Great Depression?
Church (such as the Father Divine of the Peace Mission) and Women’s (such as the Housewives Leagues) organisations were set up to support African-Americans
Why were these organisations not enough however?
These organisations tended to work within segregation rather than campaign against it, like the Housewives Leagues’ “Don’t Buy Where You Can’t Work” campaign to boycott stores to hire black workers in black districts
What did the Executive Order 7027 do in May 1935 and how was this limited in effect?
It set up the Resettlement Administration which gave loans to low income families to get new homes if they had lost their ones before
However, this only helped about 3,400 out of 200,000 black farmers for example
