Northern Migration Flashcards
What was the extent of migration to the North?
By 1920, more than 40% of African-Americans lived in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, etc.
Was segregation a thing in the North and if so, to what extent?
Not all African-Americans did poorly, some even became professionals and lived better lives, but segregation varied from city to city and there were plenty of African-Americans who’s lives changed very little
What was the impact of migration in the North?
It was significant in certain areas like Chicago where they became a powerful voting bloc and therefore, were listened to more
However, in others, they were more distributed, like in New York, and therefore had minimal impact bar creating self segregated communities
What was the impact of migration in the South?
The labour force shrank and farmers, most of them black, began to suffer even more
Southerners also used this as ‘voting with their feet’ over the Jim Crow laws, meaning blacks who stayed were accepting the laws
