A

Protestants were Christians who protested against abuses in the Church.

What abuses were occurring in the Church at the time of the Reformation?

A

The abuses of the church occurring then was simony (the sinful practice of buying or selling positions/offices), nepotism (the practice of giving important positions to members of one’s family because they are family), absenteeism (the practice of accepting honor or payment for a job you never did), and immorality ( priest not being faithful to vows).

A

The protestants didn’t actually reform the church as many of them originally started to reform but evetually left the church and created their own religions like Lutherism, or Angelican.

Describe Martin Luther’s childhood. What was his home life like? His parents? How did he think of God?

A

His parents were very harsh on him and he got beaten for little things. Because of this, he thought God was scary and powerful. God would be furious at him for everything he did wrong

A

Became a monk because he was scared if he broke his promise after being struck by lightning God would be furious with him. His goal was to earn his way into Heaven. He saw himself as awful and a sinner and God as scary and mean.

He was educated at a university. His father wanted him to study law but earned his doctorate in Theology. Martin Luther’s apostolate was lecturing on the bible.

A

Luther’s experience in the tower helped him come closer to God, and know more about him. He learned that God loves you, and to be right with God all you have to do is believe, and you don’t have to please God but have faith. He learned he was wrong about God.

Luther’s thesis was against the indulgences of the Church. At first, people thought he was wrong and were mad at him. Later the pope agreed with what he said so the people accepted it.

A

Luther wouldn’t accept church teaching because he thought he was right and that scripture doesn’t line up with the teachings of the church. Excommunicated because he wouldn’t take back his words against the church and follow the pope.

Henry was a man who basically had his head stuck up his butt. He had to be better than everyone in some way. Many people today know him for having 6 wives and being obese.

Why did Henry VIII try to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon? Why did the Pope refuse to give Henry an annulment?

A

He tried to divorce his first wife because he believed since she was originally betroved to his late brother she was an adulter and that was why she couldn’t bore him a son. The pope refused to give him an annulment because the Pope before that pope declared an annulment to the mock wedding between Catherine and his late brother prior.

A

Queen Mary tried to bring back the Catholic faith to England by killing all of the protastant leaders in England giving her the name “Bloody Mary”; as Queen Elizabeth believed in her father’s Angelican church and made changes very slowy over time, slowly eliminating Christianity in England.

Who was St. John Fisher? Why was he important? How did he die?

A

John Fisher was a very Smart man who was ordained a priest at age 21, then became bishop and the Chancellor of Cambridge university (obviously much later). He was imprisoned by Henry VIII for speaking out against king. When drafting the law for the Church of England (C of E) he wrote “as far as God permits” therefore limiting the kings power. Much later the Pope aimed to help Fisher by naming him a cardinal, King Henry was enraged. In the end John Fisher was found guilty of treason and executed outside the tower of London, he was tried and executed as a normal citizen.

Who was St. Thomas More? Why was he important? How did he die?

A

Thomas More was also a very smart man who was a great lawyer. He was also a noble. Evetually he became the Chancellor of England, but he resigned due to Henry’s marriage to Anne Boleyn. More was imprisoned because he did not take the oat of making Henry the supreme ruler, instead he just stayed silent. Since he stayed silent he couldn’t be convicted of treason, but Henry went ahead and imprsioned him. Even though he didn’t say anything or doing nothing he still was condemned to death for treason and executed on the London Bridge.

What was the Council of Trent?

A

Was three session in 18 years time taken pace during the years of 1545 - 1563 A.D. It was a response to protestants, addressed internal church dicipline and reform, acknowledging of the church’s failings and sins, writing of the first catechism, sacramental reforms.

A

The three “D”s the council focued on and tried to bring about were doctrine, discipline, and devotion.
