Protesters and Defenders Flashcards
Who are the Protestants? What were they protesting?
Protestants were Christians who protested against abuses in the Church.
What abuses were occurring in the Church at the time of the Reformation?
The abuses of the church occurring then was simony (the sinful practice of buying or selling positions/offices), nepotism (the practice of giving important positions to members of one’s family because they are family), absenteeism (the practice of accepting honor or payment for a job you never did), and immorality ( priest not being faithful to vows).
History labels this time period as the “Protestant Reformation.” Catholics tend to say whatever their original intentions were, the Protestants were not actually reformers of the Catholic Church. Explain how this is true.
The protestants didn’t actually reform the church as many of them originally started to reform but evetually left the church and created their own religions like Lutherism, or Angelican.
Describe Martin Luther’s childhood. What was his home life like? His parents? How did he think of God?
His parents were very harsh on him and he got beaten for little things. Because of this, he thought God was scary and powerful. God would be furious at him for everything he did wrong
Why did Martin Luther become a monk/priest? As a monk, what was Martin’s number one goal? (How did he see himself and how did he see God?
Became a monk because he was scared if he broke his promise after being struck by lightning God would be furious with him. His goal was to earn his way into Heaven. He saw himself as awful and a sinner and God as scary and mean.
How was Luther educated? What was his apostolate?
He was educated at a university. His father wanted him to study law but earned his doctorate in Theology. Martin Luther’s apostolate was lecturing on the bible.
Describe Luther’s “tower experience”. What did he learn about God and himself?
Luther’s experience in the tower helped him come closer to God, and know more about him. He learned that God loves you, and to be right with God all you have to do is believe, and you don’t have to please God but have faith. He learned he was wrong about God.
Are we saved by faith alone?
We are not saved by faith alone but also by grace. Our kind acts and love for one another are important too.
According to the Catholic Church, what does grace do for us? According to Luther, what does it do?
According to Luther grace just covers up our sins while Catholics believe it makes us new/ forgives our sins.
What were Luther’s 95 theses? How were they received by people in the Church?
Luther’s thesis was against the indulgences of the Church. At first, people thought he was wrong and were mad at him. Later the pope agreed with what he said so the people accepted it.
Why wouldn’t Luther accept Church teaching? Why was Luther excommunicated?
Luther wouldn’t accept church teaching because he thought he was right and that scripture doesn’t line up with the teachings of the church. Excommunicated because he wouldn’t take back his words against the church and follow the pope.
Did Luther really want to reform the Catholic Church or to create a protest and destroy the Church? Explain your answer.
Luther wanted to protest and destroy the church not reform it because he created a whole new church and beliefs (the luthern church).
How did Luther live after he left the Church?
He at first entered a state of depression, then he got a wife (who was an ex-religious like him), six kids, and made Lutherism.
Initially, what sort of man was King Henry VIII?
Henry was a man who basically had his head stuck up his butt. He had to be better than everyone in some way. Many people today know him for having 6 wives and being obese.
Why did Henry VIII try to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon? Why did the Pope refuse to give Henry an annulment?
He tried to divorce his first wife because he believed since she was originally betroved to his late brother she was an adulter and that was why she couldn’t bore him a son. The pope refused to give him an annulment because the Pope before that pope declared an annulment to the mock wedding between Catherine and his late brother prior.
