proteins intro (AA, Peptides, proteins ) Flashcards
What can a variety of polymers be built from?
small set of monomers(common to all life
What does synthesis require?
Energy.
It forms covalent bonds between components and eliminates water.
degradation the reverse
What happens in a condensation reaction?
It joins two monomers with a covalent bond, removing water.(basically dehydration)
Water removal means the monomer becomes a residue within the polymer.
What is anabolism?
Building up macromolecules usually REQUIRES energy input and enzymes.
What is hydrolysis?
Reverse of the dehydration reaction, breaks two monomers apart by adding back a water molecule.
What is catabolism?
Breaking down macromolecules usually RELEASES energy and needs hydrolytic enzymes.
Give an example of a structural protein?
Collagen(bone connective tissue), Keratin(hair)
Give an example of a storage protein?
Casein(milk), Ovalbumin(egg)
Give an example of an enzyme protein?
Amylase(saliva)
Give an example of a transport protein?
haemoglobin(blood oxygen), myosin(muscle)
Give an example of a receptor protein?
Acteylcholine R(nerve, muscle), Antibody(blood)
Give an example of a hormone protein?
Insulin(glucose metabolism)
Give an example of a toxin protein?
Botulinum toxin (BoTox).
What are proteins made of?
Amino acids.
