proteins in the blood Flashcards
what is the difference between plasma and serum
serum does not contain fibrinogen (so it does not have coagulation factors)
what are the two serum proteins
albumin and globulin
what is the role of albumin
maintains plasma oncotic pressure
transports substances in blood
negative acute phase protein
what does hyperalbuminemia indicate
dehydration
glucocorticoid drugs
what does hypoalbuminemia indicate
decreased albumin synthesis (inflammaition, hepatic insufficiency, malabsorption)
increased albumin loss (blood loss, PLE)
what is the role of globulins
immunoglobulins are used for immune defence and are transporters for movement of nutrients etc
what does hyperglobinemia indicate
inflammation
haemoconcentration
B lymphocytic neoplasia/multiple myeloma
what does polyclonal gammapathy look like and indicate
wide peak,
indicates inflammation
what does monoclonal gammapathy look like and indicate
sharp, tall peak
indicated multiple myeloma
what test do you run to find out what type of globulin you have
serum protein electrophoresis
diagnosis of multiple myeloma
at least two of the following
- radiographic evidence
- > 20% plasma cells in bone marrow aspirate
- monoclonal gammopathy on serum protein electrophoresis
- bence-jones proteinuria
what does hypoglobinemia indicate
inherited/acquired immune deficinecy
fibrinogen
positive acute phase protein importent in clotting
what are the plasma protein: fibrinogen ratios in cattle
>15 = dehydration <10 = inflammation
what are the plasma protein: fibrinogen ratios in horse
>20 = dehydration <15 = inflammation
