Proteins Flashcards

VIsualisation:
Could you draw the structure of an amino acid? What are the names of the different chemical groups?

False: All R groups contain sulfur
Explanation: only some do. For example the amino acid cysteine contains sulphur that enables the formation of a disulphide bridge between two cysteine amino acids
Short answer:
List 3 ways that the R groups on diferrent amino acids can be different from one another

Visualisation:
Could you draw a chemical reaction between two amino acids?
WHat type of reaction is this and what type of bond is formed?

Short answer:
What is the difference between protein primary and secondary structure? Give examples of secondary structure.

List three types of bond that stabilize the tertiary structure of a protein.
Place them in order from strongest to weakest

Visualisation and explanation:
How would you expect hydrophilic and hydrophobic R groups on amino acids to arrange themselves when a globular protein folds into its tertiary structure?

Short essay answer:
Describe the structure of haemoglobin as fully as possible
(try to go for 4 or 5 bullet points)

Essay Prep:
Compare and contrast the structure and roles of globular and fibrous proteins…
(try and list 6 key differences)

Short answer:
Describe the structure of collagen in as much detail as possible
Aim for 4 bulletpoints

Short answer:
Describe and explain the science behind the test for proteins
Extra - why doen’t this test detect amino acids (only peptides)
