Proteins Flashcards
What is the basic monomer unit of a polypeptide?
amino acid
Name the four parts of an amino acid.
- amino group
- carboxyl group
- hydrogen atom
- R group
What is the bond between two proteins called?
dipeptide
What is the primary structure of proteins?
the sequences of amino acids that makes up the polypeptides of a protein
What is the secondary structure of a protein?
chain of amino acids of the polypeptides of a protein is folded (a-helix/b-pleated sheet)
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
folding of the whole polypeptide chain, with bonds to maintain it (disulphide bridges, ionic, hydrogen bonds)
What is the quarternary structure of a protein?
a number of polypeptide chains linked together, associated with some non-protein groups
Test for proteins
Biuret test
What colour indicates presence for peptide bonds?
purple
