Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins?
Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and often contain sulfur.
Protein structure
Determines function
Primary structure
The amino acids in a polypeptide chain and the order they appear in.
Secondary structure
Weak hydrogen bonds form between some of the amino acids in the chain and make it coil into a helix.
Proteins with a secondary structure
Proteins with a secondary structure are fibrous e.g. collagen, actin and myosin
Tertiary structure
Proteins can wind up into tangled shapes using a variety of additional bonds.
Proteins with a tertiary structure
Proteins with a tertiary structure are globular e.g. enzymes, hormones and antibodies
Quarternary structure
Formed when several polypeptides become bonded together e.g haemoglobin
