Proteins Flashcards
0
Q
Define colloidal systems
A
Too large dissolve but too small settle out of solution therefore remain suspended in solution
1
Q
What are proteins?
A
Polymers that form colloidal systems
2
Q
What joins amino acids together?
A
Peptide bonds
3
Q
What happens when two amino acids are joined by a peptide bond
A
Dipeptide is formed
4
Q
What affects the protein structure?
A
Extremely high temperatures
The wrong pH
5
Q
What is denaturing?
A
When the protein structure changes its shape making it impossible to perform its proper function
6
Q
List five biological importance of proteins
A
- Some act as enzymes, antibodies or protective proteins
- Serve as a source of energy only after primary energy has been used
- Some proteins are hormones that control pH of body’s processes
- Act as respiratory pigments (hemoglobin in blood and myoglobin in muscles)
- Proteins main building materials and provide structural framework for cells
