Proteins Flashcards
What can protein be detected in?
Plasma, Urine, Cerebrospinal fluid, etc.
Finish the sentence: the activity of a sample of an ______ is generally related to the amount of protein present in that sample.
Enzyme
What is the simplest method of estimating protein concentrations?
Measure the absorbance at 280nm due to the aromatic amino acids (primarily tyrosine and tryptophan), only useful when dealing with pure protein samples
The normal value of plasma proteins in humans is 60-80 mg/ml while your protein standards range from 1- 10 mg/ml, what is the solution to this?
Dilute the protein standards 1 in 10
How much biuret reagent should be added to the sample and standards and for how long should they be left
Add 3ml of biuret and allow to stand for 20 min
When plasm proteins are lower than normal, what is it called and what causes it?
Hypoproteinemia, and is caused by malnutrition, liver disease, and severe burns
When plasma proteins are higher than normal, what is it called and what are the causes?
Hyperproteinemia, and is caused by dehydration due to sever vomiting or diarrhoea.
