Proteins Flashcards
What are the functions that proteins perform
Structural - collagen
Signalling - hormones
Catalyst - enzymes speeding up reactions
Transport - haemoglobin transports oxygen.
What group is H-N-H
Amine group
What group changes in the structure of amino acids?
The variable group
What is this group called COOH?
Carboxylic group
How many amino acids are there?
20
What group allows a C.R to happen without both being a hydroxyl group?
Amino acids
What bond is formed between 2 amino acids
Peptide bond
Where does a C.R occur between?
It occurs between the carboxyl group of one amino acid and amine group of the other
What is the primary structure of a polypeptide formation ?
The base sequence structure of amino acids. This is determined by your gene
What is the secondary structure ?
The initial folding of a polypeptide into an alpha helix or Beta pleated sheets due to hydrogen bonding.
What is the tertiary structure?
Further folding of polypeptide into a 3D shape held together by hydrogen bonds, disulfide bonds and ionic bonds. Occurs between C=O and N-H groups
What is the Quaternary structure ?
Múltiple polypeptides bonded together e.g haemoglobin
What is the prosthetic group?
Non - amino acid based molecule that aids function
What is the colour change when you test for protein
Biuret = blue to purple if amino acid is present
