Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catabolic reaction ?
The breaking down of a reaction
Define activation energy ?
Amount of energy required to break and form new bonds
How does an enzyme work ?
By forming an enzyme - substrate complex which strains the bonds therefore lowering the activation energy
Is an enzyme a one time use?
No the enzyme remains unchanged after a reaction and can continue to work on the substrate.
What is an anabolic reaction ?
Building up reactions
How does some OTHER enzymes work ?
They work by bringing the substrate closer together. This lowers the activation energy needed for the reaction to take place.
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a protein catalyst that lowers the activation energy without being used up
What is ATP?
A source of energy produced immediately from respiration
What is the A level induced fit model ?
- Before the reaction, enzyme active site is not complementary to substrate.
- Shape of the active site changes as the E-S complex forms
3.This stresses bonds or brings substrates closer together.
4.Lowering Activation Energy
What is hydrogen Peroxide ?
A toxic cellular waste product that must be broken down
What is the mean rate of reaction equation?
Amount of product formed / time taken to form product
What is the same as E-S complexes ?
Successful collisions
