Proteins Flashcards
what are Structural proteins ?
provide support – fibrous proteins (eg collagen and elastin in connective tissue; keratin in claws, horns, beaks, nails, hooves and feathers) – globular proteins (eg actin and tubulin) – membrane proteins embedded in the lipid bilayer.
What are transport proetiens?
involved in the movement of other substances (eg haemoglobin in red blood cells); carrier and channel proteins.
What are storage proteins
store amino acids (eg ovalbumin, casein and ferritin).
What are defence proteins
antibodies and interferons.
What are hormones ?
chemical signals that travel in the blood to act on target cells.(eg insulin and glucagon)
What are receptor proteins?
involved in the response of a cell to chemical stimuli.
What are enzymes ?
Enzymes speed up the rate of chemical reactions without undergoing any change themselves.
What is a phenotype ?
The characteristics of a cell or organism, determined by its protein expression
